Our Hall

The opening of a new hall at the University of Hong Kong is a historic event, because hall life here is a unique cultural, social, and educational experience. For many, hall life is the defining experience of their years at the University—a place where lifelong friendships are forged and characters shaped.

Lee Shau Kee Hall opened its doors at the end of August 2005, providing places for 300 students in well-appointed, modern rooms that are a model of efficient and comfortable design. Each floor is also fitted out with a pantry where students can gather, cook informally, and share their experiences with one another. The Multi-Purpose Hall, the Student Association Room, and various other meeting rooms also provide facilities for intellectual and social exchange.

One of the defining characteristics of Lee Shau Kee Hall is its international flavour. More than a third of the Hall's residents are from outside Hong Kong, with twelve different nationalities being represented. Additionally, students at Lee Shau Kee Hall are taking degrees in more than a dozen different academic disciplines, making the Hall one of the most diverse at the University. This mixture of nationalities and areas of study provides out Hall Residents with a rich canvas of experiences from which to learn.

As the University is approaching internationalisation, there will be increasing numbers of students coming from different nationalities and multi-cultural backgrounds. Most of the students, both local and non-local students, are resided in halls or colleges at the University. Halls of residence form part of the proud tradition of the University. Over the years, hall education has played an important role of whole-person education that the University pursues. Like other halls/colleges at the University, Lee Shau Kee Hall is much more than a place where you live. It is also a place where you can learn. Different halls have different characteristics. Lee Shau Kee Hall has given hallmates experiences that could not have been obtained from any other hall in the University.

Lee Shau Kee Hall is already playing a central role in fulfilling the University's ambition towards becoming a global institution. For this, and much more, our enduring gratitude is owed to Dr. Lee Shau Kee.

The splendid Lee Shau Kee Hall, which is named in his honour, was made possible by his generous gift to the University and acts as a lasting tribute to his belief that education is the best possible investment.
